The highest mountains rise in the northern and central interior, including Morne Diablotins at 1,447 m. Roseau lies on the southwest coast, Portsmouth in the northwest and Douglas-Charles Airport on the northeast side of the island. Roads frequently have to follow valleys, coastlines and mountain passes rather than direct lines.
