Dominican Republic Maps
The Dominican Republic is often imagined as a strip of beach resorts, but its topography explains why journeys can take longer than expected. Several major mountain ranges run across the country, separating the north coast, Cibao Valley, central highlands and Caribbean coast.
How to Read the Country
North Coast
Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete sit between the Atlantic and the Cordillera Septentrional. The mountains are close enough to the coast to affect rainfall and road routes.
Cibao Valley
Santiago and the fertile Cibao lie between mountain systems and form the country's major agricultural and population corridor.
Central Mountains
The Cordillera Central contains Pico Duarte and the highest terrain in the Caribbean. Roads through the interior are slower and more winding than coastal highway travel.
East Coast
Punta Cana, Bávaro, Bayahibe and La Romana are comparatively flat and connected by modern tourism infrastructure.
Samaná
The peninsula is mountainous, humid and visually very different from Punta Cana. Newer roads have shortened travel times, but the final stretches to beaches and waterfalls can still be slow.
Southwest
Barahona and Pedernales combine dry coastal landscapes, high mountains and large protected areas. Distances are substantial and services become less dense.
Distances Can Be Misleading
A straight-line distance on the map is a poor guide to travel time. Santo Domingo to Punta Cana is a relatively straightforward highway journey; routes into Samaná, Jarabacoa or the southwest involve more varied terrain. When planning a multi-region trip, check real driving time rather than simply measuring kilometres.
