Martinique's relief explains much of the island's character. The mountainous volcanic north rises to Mount Pelée, while the south is generally lower, drier and more indented by bays and beaches.

The map shows the sharp contrast between the high volcanic north and the lower south. Mount Pelée reaches 1,397 metres in the northwest, while the Pitons du Carbet dominate the central mountain chain. Fort-de-France lies on the large western bay, and the main southern beach areas spread around Trois-Îlets, Le Diamant, Sainte-Anne and Le Marin.
