Best Bird Books and Field Guides for the Caribbean
A good Caribbean bird book should do more than show attractive species. It has to help you identify birds quickly, show where they occur, distinguish island endemics from migrants and be practical enough to carry. For a multi-island trip, one regional guide is usually the best starting point. For Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico or the ABC islands, a modern destination-specific guide is worth the extra space in your luggage.
How CaribSurf rates the books: the score is our editorial assessment of Caribbean usefulness, identification quality, currency, portability and trip-planning value. It is not an Amazon customer rating. Prices are approximate reference or publisher prices checked in August 2026 and can change by seller, format and country.

Birds of the West Indies, Second Edition
Herbert A. Raffaele, James Wiley, Orlando H. Garrido, Allan Keith & Janis I. Raffaele · 2020 · ISBN 9780691180519
CaribSurf: 9.5/10Guide price: US$24.95
Best for: Travellers visiting several Caribbean islands or buying just one regional field guide.
The strongest all-round starting point for Caribbean birding. It covers more than 600 species, including endemics, migrants, introduced birds and uncommon visitors. The compact format, distribution maps and colour-coded endemic species make it practical in the field rather than merely attractive on a bookshelf.
Strengths Excellent regional coverage; compact; very good for island-hopping; strong endemic focus.
Limitations A regional guide cannot give the same depth on local sites and island-specific status as a dedicated country guide.
Field Guide to the Birds of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
Best for Hispaniola
Field Guide to the Birds of the Dominican Republic and Haiti
Steven Latta, Christopher Rimmer & Kent McFarland · 2022 · ISBN 9780691232393
CaribSurf: 9.7/10Guide price: US$24.95
Best for: Birding trips to the Dominican Republic or Haiti.
A modern, island-specific guide with more than 300 species, current range maps and 150 new illustrations. Identification marks, voice, habitat, distribution, status and local names are brought together in a practical facing-page layout. For a dedicated Hispaniola trip it is much more useful than carrying only a broad West Indies guide.
Strengths Very current; excellent island focus; strong treatment of endemic species; practical layout.
Limitations Too specialised if your trip covers several unrelated Caribbean islands.
Birds of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, Third Edition.
Best for Puerto Rico & the Virgin Islands
Birds of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, Third Edition
Herbert A. Raffaele, Clive Petrovic, Sergio A. Colón López, Lisa D. Yntema & José A. Salguero Faria · 2021 · ISBN 9780691211671
CaribSurf: 9.6/10Guide price: US$24.95
Best for: Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and nearby Virgin Islands birding.
A fully revised guide covering 347 species and highlighting 19 endemic species. Species are arranged by habitat, illustrations sit beside the identification text, and the book includes useful birding-hotspot information. It is one of the most convenient destination-specific guides in the region.
Strengths Excellent field usability; all regional species illustrated; useful hotspot information.
Limitations Its geographic focus is deliberately narrow, so it is not a replacement for a general West Indies guide on a multi-island trip.
Field Guide to the Birds of Cuba, Second Edition.
Best for Cuba
Field Guide to the Birds of Cuba, Second Edition
Arturo Kirkconnell & Orlando H. Garrido · 2024 · ISBN 9781501755811
CaribSurf: 9.7/10Guide price: about US$29.95
Best for: Anyone making Cuba a serious birding destination.
The fully updated second edition covers more than 370 recorded species and 29 extant Cuban endemics. It uses 95 colour plates and more than 700 images, with range maps, habitat information, behaviour, vocalisations and different plumages where identification requires them. Cuba has enough endemic birds to justify carrying a dedicated guide.
Strengths Current taxonomy and distribution; excellent endemic coverage; strong illustrations and maps.
Limitations More book than a casual beach visitor needs, but exactly the right tool for a dedicated Cuba birding trip.
Birds of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao: A Site and Field Guide.
Best for Aruba, Bonaire & Curaçao
Birds of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao: A Site and Field Guide
Jeffrey V. Wells & Allison Childs Wells; illustrated by Robert Dean · 2017 · ISBN 9781501701078
CaribSurf: 9.3/10Guide price: about US$39.95
Best for: Travellers who want both identification help and detailed birding locations on the ABC islands.
This is unusually useful because it combines a field guide with a substantial site guide. It covers more than 280 species and devotes considerable space to where to bird on each island, including habitat, access and the species likely to be found. That makes it particularly valuable for an independent traveller without a local guide.
Strengths Excellent site information; strong regional focus; especially useful for planning birding days yourself.
Limitations Larger and more expensive than a simple pocket guide; the identification section is not as compact as some modern facing-page guides.
Do you still need a North American field guide?
Usually not as your main book. Many Caribbean islands receive migrants from North America, but the modern regional and island guides above already include the species you are likely to encounter. A Sibley, Stokes or Kaufman guide can still be useful at home for studying difficult North American migrants, but it is a supplement rather than the best first purchase for a Caribbean trip.
One book or two?
For an island-hopping trip, Birds of the West Indies is the most efficient single-book solution. For a serious trip to Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico or the ABC islands, take the regional guide plus the destination-specific book. The first gives you regional context; the second gives you more precise local status, maps, habitats and birding sites.
