How the Geography Affects a Trip
South
Hewanorra International Airport and Vieux Fort are on flatter terrain. Soufrière is relatively close in distance but separated by hilly roads.
Southwest / Soufrière
The Pitons, volcanic centre, rainforest and steep west-coast slopes create the island's most dramatic scenery.
Northwest
Castries, Vigie, Rodney Bay and Gros Islet contain the largest concentration of urban services, resorts and nightlife.
Interior
Mount Gimie and rainforest ridges make east-west travel slower than a flat road map suggests.
Airport Planning
Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) is in the south. George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) is near Castries in the northwest. Travellers staying in Rodney Bay or Gros Islet should allow roughly 1½ hours or more for the road transfer from UVF, while Soufrière is much closer to Hewanorra.
Road Planning
The west-coast road between Soufrière, Canaries, Anse La Raye and Castries is exceptionally scenic but narrow and winding. The east-coast route is useful for north-south travel and gives access to a less touristy side of Saint Lucia. A rental car adds freedom, but first-time visitors should avoid planning too many distant attractions on one day.
